Motorcycle law, or any accident law, involves issues that may be particular to the state in which the accident occurred. California motorcycle accident law allows for lane splitting, although anyone lane splitting needs to be aware of the possibility for injury, as many car drivers do not understand this and are not looking for a rider coming up between the lanes of traffic. California motorcycle law as it applies to lane splitting requires that the rider do so with reasonable safety, including passing at a safe speed and changing lanes in a safe manner. We have even had cases where an angry driver has opened their door into a motorcycle splitting lanes causing injury and damages.
You especially want to be aware of how to protect yourself and your investment. Always carry sufficient insurance including Uninsured Motorist coverage (see our Insurance page). If you sustain a major injury, there is no guarantee the other party’s insurance is sufficient to cover your medical bills, lost wages, repair of your bike and your pain and suffering. Always save receipts when you add all that custom chrome to your bike, or spend $5,000 on a paint job. We recommend getting additional collision coverage for the custom work on your cruiser to be sure you are properly compensated for the repair. . You want to repair your bike as close as possible to the condition it was in before the accident, and without sufficient coverage and planning that may not happen!
