Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys®: Tough Steelworker woman rider gains confidence riding.
Edie Erwin is a 5’4’ great woman rider who for 17 years has carved her own path working as a steelworker. Working in a male dominated field is often not the easy path. It takes moxie, courage and a good sense of self, traits often found in women riders. Edie told me riding has given her confidence and the feeling of independence, which is also a common mention found in women riders. Edie shares, “I ride an ’05 Electra Glide Classic and a ’79 Lowrider. In 1994 Joe my husband surprised me with an ’80 Kawasaki 200. I think one reason he did was that I was a terrible passenger. Whatever the motive, I am forever grateful to him for sparking my interest in motorcycling. My first attempt at riding ended with the bike and me in the bushes. Unharmed, but discouraged. I took the MSF course the following summer and the rest is history.
The biggest challenge has been my height. I am 5’4″ with rather short legs. I have had both my motorcycles lowered and the seat modified on my ’05. I also had the soles of my boots raised 3/4 of an inch. I try to plan ahead when I park so I don’t need to get a push. I live in Ohio and its good when I can get 7 months of riding. I plan to spend winters in the south when I retire, so I can enjoy year-round motorcycling.
I find riding to be very rewarding. It makes all the hard work I do seem worth it as well as giving me confidence. I enjoy the feeling of independence and I enjoy traveling by myself. I try to take one big road trip each year alone. In 2008 I completed an Iron Butt Ride, traveling 1,000 miles in 24 hours. Don’t get me wrong though, I also love racking up the miles with my husband by my side. I know a lot of women who will only ride with their husbands, boyfriends or friends.
I say: Don’t be afraid to get out on your own once in a while!”
Riding offers so much, in so many diverse ways. I bet a lot of folks can relate to Edie’s mention of gaining confidence and independence.
Get out on the open road! What it offers is priceless!
