Police officers in Pennsylvania will be out in full force through Labor Day as part of a nationwide DUI crackdown that began on August 20. According to the York Daily Record, over 600 Pennsylvania municipal and state police departments will be involved with this campaign against impaired driving. Throughout the DUI crackdown, Pennsylvania police will be working extra hours at DUI checkpoints and roving patrols. If you are caught driving while impaired, you will be arrested.
Driving while impaired is never a good idea, but motorcyclists must be particularly careful to avoid alcohol before riding. Operating a motorcycle safely requires skill, focus, and good judgment. Even one drink of alcohol can impair these abilities and slow your reaction time.
Riding a motorcycle while impaired can have deadly consequences. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motorcyclists represented the largest percentage of drivers with a blood alcohol concentration over the legal limit (.08 g/dL or higher) who were involved in fatal motorcycle crashes. PennDOT indicates that 40% to 45% of motorcyclists killed in crashes had consumed alcohol, but the blood alcohol concentration was only above the legal limits in one-third of those riders. Even a small amount of alcohol can cause a fatal Pennsylvania motorcycle accident.
There are other good reasons to abstain from driving while impaired. In addition to the potentially fatal consequences of driving under the influence, a DUI conviction may result in fines, loss of your driver’s license, or even jail. Repeat Pennsylvania DUI offenders may also be required to have an ignition interlock system installed on their vehicle at their own expense.
