Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys®: The Rolling Thunder 25th Anniversary Ride for Freedom is rapidly approaching and all supporters are welcome to attend. While thousands of Rolling Thunder members will be there to support this amazing event, it is important to know that you do not have to be a member to ride!
So what is Rolling Thunder?
In 1995, Rolling Thunder was incorporated with over 90 chartered chapters throughout the United States. While many of Rolling Thunder’s members are motorcyclists and many are veterans, neither is a prerequisite for joining. All members are united for a very specific cause—to bring full accountability for Prisoners of War and Missing in Action soldiers. They believe in reminding the government, media, and public about these missing soldiers so the world will never forget them or their contribution.
The first official gathering of the Rolling Thunder group was in 1988 when veterans and family members met during the 1988 Memorial Day weekend in Washington D.C. They decided to arrive on motorcycles to sound like the 1965 North Vietnam bombing campaign titled “Operation Rolling Thunder”. Word quickly spread through the veteran network, and in 1988, approximately 2500 motorcyclists from all over the United States attended the rally. They decided to continue these traditions until all POW/MIA were accounted for. Since then the Memorial Day weekend Ride for Freedom has grown to an estimate 900,000 motorcyclists!
If you would like to join the nearly 1 million bikers who will be attending this year’s Ride for Freedom, you can find more information at the Rolling Thunder site. The event will kick off on Friday, May 25th at the Molly Pitcher Rest Stop at the NJ Turnpike at 9:00 and conclude that evening with a candle light vigil by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. During the event, there will be a barbeque, wreath presentations at various memorials, guest speakers, and even a bike raffle drawing for a new Harley Davidson.
