A customized bike, designed and built by students at Sturgis Brown High School, has won first place at the 26th annual Donnie Smith Show held March 24th in St. Paul, Minnesota.  The nation’s top “student made” bike won awards in both the overall best display category, and full custom bagger classification.  And now, it sets its sights on Sturgis, and more specifically the Sturgis Buffalo Chip®, where it will be auctioned off in support of the Legends Ride event.
The program, dubbed the Student Build Challenge, is now in its fourth year and is proudly sponsored by the Sturgis Buffalo Chip®.  The Challenge’s main goal is to mentor and teach students valuable life skills, confidence and provide them with a sense of community.  Rod Woodruff, president of the Sturgis Buffalo Chip®, says:  “For many students, it’s a life changing experience that has given more than one student incentive to stay in school”.
Eligible students can participate in twice a week workshops, mentored by industry veterans Randy and Nick Cramer of Dakota V Twin and Keith Terry of Terry Components with parts being donated by various businesses within the industry.  Once the bike is completed; it goes on a publicity tour, visiting shows as well as being featured in the iconic American Iron Magazine.
The students start off with a stock Harley-Davidson Road King, generously donated by  local dealer, Black Hills Harley-Davidson.  The group will then tinker and reshape the bike until it is transformed into a full on custom motorcycle, with only a few semblances to the original machine.  The project not only helps out the students who build the bike but others in the region as well—as proceeds from the auction all go to local charities to help those in need.  To date, the Legends Ride has raised $240,000 for these local causes.
The 32nd annual Sturgis Buffalo Chip® motorcycle and music festival will be taking place August 2nd to 11th, with the Legends Ride slated to run on the 5th.  Participants will start in Deadwood and proceed through the scenic landscapes of South Dakota until they rendezvous back at the Buffalo Chip for a Legends Ride celebration and concert.
Congratulations to the students on a great accomplishment.
