Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys®: Motorcycle Graveyard Keeps the Past Alive
While Central Michigan in the middle of winter is probably not the easiest place to hunt for replacement parts for your motorcycle, it might just be one of the best. Steven Tompkins owns the Snowmobile and Motorcycle Salvage located in northern Mount Pleasant, Michigan. This motorcycle graveyard of twisted metal and handlebars is a veritable treasure trove of motorcycle parts. “It’s like a candy store,” says Tompkins. “People are welcome to come out and pick out what they want.”
In the early 1970s, Tompkins’ father came up with an idea for the scrapyard and purchased 90 acres located at 4101 E. River Road. Sales manager Dave Ryckman recalls just how big it looked the first time he saw it. “It just keeps getting bigger as it goes,” Ryckman says. “When I first started here in 1981, there might have been 10 acres that had stuff on it. Now, there are 20 to 30 acres of parts.”
Any given day of the year you can walk across the vast span of motorcycle parts and stumble across some incredible treasures. It is the perfect place for a motorcycle enthusiast who is looking for spare parts to rebuild a classic or a unique accessory to customize his own one-of-a-kind motorcycle. Ryckman has even helped motorcyclists create these one-of-a-kind bikes –sometimes starting with just a single part and creating the entire motorcycle around that piece. “I had one guy come in here who only had a muffler of a motorcycle, and he said he wanted to build one from it,” Ryckman said.
Customer, Ron Conner of Cedar learned his way around the graveyard searching for parts to keep lawnmowers running when he owned a landscape company. From motorcycles to lawnmowers, Tompkins’ scrapyard usually has the part you need; you just have to find it. Dealers even come out occasionally to search for that special part that eludes them.
Winter and early spring are the busiest time for Tompkins and the four or five employees he has on hand. After all, that’s when motorcyclists bring their machines out of the garage to get them ready for the season.
Spring is finally here and the motorcycle lawyers at Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys® know that all of our BAM members will be spring cleaning and fine tuning their motorcycles. We love stories of motorcycles and places that continue to salvage them.
