Pennsylvania’s GRAND CANYON is a story written by Dyann Schaff. Dyann shared this with one of our partners New York Rider Magazine. Dyann met Carmella, of New York Rider, during Daytona Bike Week in Florida this past spring and the rest they say is history.
Over the 2008 4th of July Weekend, I along with my husband and four other motorcycle enthusiasts journeyed to PA Grand Canyon. Located in Tioga County, PA, the PA Grand Canyon is referred to as the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania and the Pine Creek Gorge. It is part of Tioga State Forest and is approximately 50 miles long and 1000 to 1500 feet deep. Pine Creek winds though the base of the canyon.
Upon our arrival, we checked into the historic Penn Wells Hotel located in downtown Wellsboro, PA. The central town located in the heart of canyon country, it is a quaint, nostalgic town with a picturesque main street, gaslight street lights, movie theater, shops, and restaurants. The Penn Wells Hotel is definitely old-world with the feeling and ambiance of a bygone era.
PA Grand Canyon State Park offers spectacular views of the gorge at Leonard Harrison State Park on the east rim and Colton Point State Park on the west rim. The Overlook Tower is an observation tower next to Leonard Harrison State Park near the Pine Creek Gorge. Open to the public, visitors can see for miles on a clear day.
There are several restaurants within walking distance of the Penn Wells Hotel. The Wellsboro Diner is a popular breakfast spot. Timeless Destinations serves Italian cuisine and hand- tossed pizza. Harland’s Family Style Restaurant is just that. Off the main street, it is a full-service restaurant offering breakfast all day, lunch, and dinner.
Our rides touring the area were shorter distance rides and included the following:
East Rim Ride and to Leonard Harrison State Park – Route 660 West from Wellsboro to Leonard Harrison State Park. Follow Route 660 East to 362 West to Route 6 East back to Wellsboro.
West Rim Ride and to Colton Point – Route 660 West from Wellsboro to Route 362 West. Continue on Route 362 West the junction of Route 6. Turn left onto Route 6 West arriving at Ansonia. Colton Point Road is on the left side, between the tavern and the gas station. Follow the winding Colton Point Road up the mountain to Colton Point.
Canyon Wagon Rides at Mountain Trail Horse Center – Starting in Ansonia, see the Canyon and travel through Pine Creek Gorge in an old-fashion, horse-drawn covered wagon.
Your route to or from Wellsboro, must include a stop at Cox’s Northern Tier Harley-Davidson located on South Main Street in Mansfield, PA. You’ll feel right at home and won’t be disappointed with the selection of merchandise. While the ladies shop, the gentlemen can sit and relax on the front porch.
Overall, PA Grand Canyon with its natural beauty splendor and the Wellsboro, PA are a relaxing getaway for a long weekend
Sounds like a great trip Dyann, hope to see you in Daytona, Florida 2011.
