The infamous Buffalo Chip in Sturgis, South Dakota, opened in 1982. Their 30th Anniversary will be next year – summer 2011 which, of course is during the legendary motorcycle rally – Sturgis Bike Week.

The Buffalo Chip got its start when the city of Sturgis, couldn’t handle the amount of campers in Sturgis City Park which had been home to all the campers, predominantly bikers, who attended the rally. The numbers had outgrown the parks capacity and there were just too many associated problems. This was the start of what is now known worldwide as the Legendary Buffalo Chip Campground. Rod, the owner of the Buffalo Chip, welcomed everyone looking for an alternative place to stay. The rest, as they say, is history.

According to Greg Smith of the Buffalo Chip when asked about the ‘Chips’ early history and rumors of city officials cracking down on motorcyclists due to the City Parks getting out of control, “I don’t know how to specifically say it was officials cracking down or more so trying to regain a semblance of control (too many people in tight quarters). It was buckwild back then. Sort of like the old west in comparison to the east coast back in the 1800’s.”

As for some of the ‘Buffalo Chip Rules’, leave your pets and your kids at home as the Buffalo Chip is an adult campground. My favorite is the first which is “The less rules at the Sturgis Rally, the better”.

The Buffalo Chip is named after a scout that worked with Buffalo Bill Cody during the Indian wars. The scouts name was Jim White and was given the nickname Buffalo Chips, by General Sheridan. Buffalo Chips Jim White had previously saved Buffalo Bill’s life in a skirmish with the Indians. “Buffalo Chips” Jim White was shot and killed in Montana by an Indian who was on a draw across from him while on a scouting party. Buffalo Chips was wearing a red jacket at the time, similar to the one Buffalo Bill always wore. Buffalo Bill then shot and killed the Indian who had shot his friend. Thus became the name of Buffalo Chips was defined by the ongoing definition of Friendship and Loyalty.

I, myself, will be at the Sturgis Bike Rally and of course,The Buffalo Chip this August. I am looking forward to celebrating my birthday during the Kid Rock concert. Yes, I will be turning 25 again. The concert line up for this years rally is as good as it gets. Bob Dylan, Motley Crue, Scorpions, ZZ Top, Kid Rock and so on and so on.

The Rules, the concerts, the bikers and so much more all add to the “Legend” that is The Buffalo Chip.
