One cannot express enough how important it is for a motorcycle rider to be ‘up’ on his skills. It is you against them out on the road and I am referring to automobiles and trucks when I say them.

There is an increase in the number of motorcycles on the road due to the economy and the rising cost of gas. It is cheaper to ride a motorcycle. Unfortunately the cheap cost also means some motorcyclists are also skimping on the amount of motorcycle insurance they are getting for themselves and their bike.

The National Highway and Transportation Administration (NHTSA — www.nhtsa.gov) shows the rate of motorcycle deaths has more than doubled in the past 10 years — 2,116 in 1997 to more than 4,800 in 2006 — This makes motorcycle fatalities the nation’s greatest highway traffic safety obstacle to overcome.

In addition to the usual safety tips such as ride with proper gear – this means covering your skin – I cringe every time I see a biker with shorts on. Road rash is not fun and the more skin you have exposed the more it’s gonna hurt.

Make sure other drivers can see you – this can be through skillful riding and reflective gear. Most at fault drivers who have hit a biker say they didn’t see them.

Good drivers get discounts from insurance companies because they avoid accidents – this can also be said for a lot of motorcyclists. There are those accidents that are unavoidable but how many could have been avoided?

The MSF and NHTSA urge motorcyclists to:

  • Get trained before your licensed.
  • Wear proper protective clothing.
  • Avoid alcohol and drugs.
  • Know your limits.
  • Beef up on riding skills.

And last but not least make sure you have proper motorcycle insurance coverage. If you are hit by someone and it’s not your fault you could still lose financially. Make sure you have the best coverage possible and that you are covered for underinsured and uninsured drivers.
