San Jose Crash Leaves Motorcyclist with Severe Leg Injuries

According to Silicon Valley’s Mercury News, a San Jose motorcyclist slammed into a car on Water Street on Monday, May 16, 2011. The car was pulling out of the Gold’s Gym when the motorcyclist hit the automobile. It is not clear yet who was at fault, but the San Jose motorcyclist was rushed to Santa Clara County trauma center with severe leg injuries.

Due to a motorcycle’s low profile, many drivers fail to recognize an oncoming motorcyclist and, therefore, inadvertently pull out in front of them. When this happens, San Jose motorcyclists may not have enough time to brake properly and can be thrown from their bikes and into oncoming traffic.

In a motorcycle crash, it is unfortunately the motorcyclist who sustains serious and often life-threatening injuries. In fact, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, over 90,000 motorcyclists were injured in traffic accidents in 2009 alone. Of these injuries, sustaining a severe leg injury is unfortunately very common. Leg fractures, severe road rash, and amputation are just a few of the catastrophic leg injuries a motorcyclist can suffer. Sadly, these injuries can lead to years of painful rehabilitation, multiple surgeries, and thousands of dollars in medical expenses and lost wages. In addition, many motorcycle accident victims who suffer severe leg trauma find it difficult to resume their daily activities and may often find it impossible to continue to work in their chosen profession.
