California Motorcycle Law

Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys®: “Look Twice, Save a Life” is actually working!

California motorcyclists are well aware of the dangers—we’ve heard them all our lives. We know about helmet safety, reflective clothing, and safe lane sharing. We also know that even when we take all the necessary safety precautions, some motorists still fail to notice us on the road. Luckily, the California Highway Patrol understands this too, and for the last two years, their motorcycle safety campaign has been dedicated to just that—increasing California drivers’ awareness of motorcyclists on the road.

The federally funded safety campaign, “Look Twice, Save a Life”, was started to help reduce the number of fatal California motorcycle accidents—and based on the preliminary 2010 numbers, it has been a success. The number of fatal motorcycle involved collisions decreased by 9% and injuries decreased 8.5%! While this important motorcycle safety campaign is now coming to a close, CHP officials hope that the message will remain. Through increased awareness and education, California motorists and motorcyclists can learn to share the road safely.

California Motorcycle Attorneys Who Ride!

Becoming aware of a motorcyclist’s presence on the road is the first step towards preventing a large number of catastrophic and serious California motorcycle accidents. Motorcyclists can be especially difficult to see in traffic, at night, and during bad weather. In addition, bridges, tunnels, and intersections often create situations where motorcyclists are overlooked, leading to serious and often fatal crashes.

As a California motorcyclist, there is one very important thing you can do to decrease your chances of being involved in a serious motorcycle accident. The CHP advises all motorcyclists to consider signing up for the California Motorcyclist Safety Program before they ever hit the road. They offer both basic courses for new riders and more comprehensive programs for experienced riders. The CMSP expects to train roughly 65,000 motorcyclists every year.
