Safety Tips for Surviving Sturgis
Motorcycle Attorneys: The 71st Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in the South Dakota Black Hills is officially underway and ends on Sunday the 14th of August. While the rally offers motorcyclists from around the world an opportunity to mingle, swap parts, view unique motorcycles, and listen to some amazing music, having so many motorcyclists in one small location can be a bit dangerous. Last year, there were 27 fatal motorcycle accidents in South Dakota involving motorcycles and more than one-third of those crashes occurred in West River counties during the weeks surrounding the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

In an effort to keep motorcyclists safe, the South Dakota Highway Patrol has issued some safety tips that may help keep you and your friends safe during this week at Sturgis.

Always show respect: This goes for motorists and motorcyclists alike. Show respect to others on the roadway and you are likely to avoid some serious and catastrophic accidents.

Ride in a single file line: Motorcyclists are encouraged to ride in a single file line and avoid crowding the center line or other motorists.

Obey all speed limits: All motorcyclists and motorists need to obey all posted speed limit signs, especially on curves.

Do not drink and drive: No one should get behind the wheel of a car or on a motorcycle if they have been drinking. This is true no matter WHERE you ride. Drinking and driving is against the law in every state.

Wear helmets: A helmet offers the best protection against a spinal cord injury or a traumatic brain injury. Reduce your chances of sustaining a fatal injury by wearing the appropriate gear, including helmets.

South Dakota loves motorcyclists, and as such, they want to see that everyone stays safe during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. If you are attending Sturgis this year, be sure to follow these simple safety tips when you are riding.
