Keep Me Alive Don’t Text And Drive®

For most of us, using our hand-held devices while we drive is illegal – but many of us do it anyway and distracted driving has caused many car/motorcycle accidents. As motorcyclists we already know we are at risk of being hit by a distracted driver.

Text messaging can create an accident risk 23 times worse than operating a vehicle while not distracted. Sending or receiving a text takes a driver’s attention off from the road for an average of 4.6 seconds, the equivalent at 55MPH of driving the length of an entire football field, blind. According to the Governor’s Highway Safety Association, there are a handful of states that aren’t waiting for the average driver to wise up. These states have taken a proactive approach to reducing the risk of accidents on their roads by enacting cell phone bans. These states include California, New Jersey, Louisiana, Washington D.C., Illinois, Delaware, Connecticut and Arkansas. These states are the forerunners in this emerging combat against distracted driving, and while they blaze the trail ahead, the rest of the states will likely follow suit and eventually minimize the risk of distracted driving related crashes and injuries.
